What is Inner Child Therapy?

Inner Child Therapy is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on our underlying ideas about ourselves, others, and the world around us. These views are instilled in us while we are young, and we lack the ability to assess whether the material on which we base our beliefs is true or not. Because this process happens at such a young age, the knowledge and ideas we learn as children, and which we carry into adulthood, appear to be absolute truths because they have always been thus.

If we have a stable emotional childhood with pleasant experiences, the beliefs we acquire about ourselves and others will most likely serve us well, since we form positive views about ourselves and others.

If, on the other hand, we experience an unstable, stressful, or unpleasant childhood with little or no support, we are more prone to adopt limiting and incorrect ideas about ourselves and others, such as “I’m not good enough,” “I can’t get anything right,” “No one can be trusted,” and so on.

These erroneous ideas we picked up as children stick with us and continue to be active, often without our knowledge, causing problems in our lives by influencing our decision-making, self-esteem, relationships, and more. However, because these ideas are hidden from our conscious awareness, we are perplexed and frustrated by the ‘conflict’ that exists between our intellect and our emotions and behaviors.

What is inner child therapy

Inner Child Therapy is based on the idea that the ‘inner child,’ the portion of our unconscious mind that holds our childhood experiences and ideas, can be talked with and those limiting beliefs may be transformed.

Through your unconscious mind, you will be aided in accessing precise knowledge that will allow you to get to the bottom of any persistent difficulties or unpleasant behaviors.

Using techniques such as transactional analysis, your ‘adult’ part, with the help of the therapist, is able to provide your ‘child’ part with the necessary information, love, and support to modify those incorrect and harmful ideas.

Why Inner Child Therapy

Whether the fundamental cause of a problem is outside of a person’s conscious awareness or whether they are aware of it, the experiences associated with that root cause are frequently accompanied by profound emotions of guilt and shame.

The distance between the conscious and unconscious minds must be crossed in order to heal these concerns of blame, shame, and guilt from which the false ideas have originated (and that stay inside the unconscious mind). This is accomplished through the use of metaphor, visualization, relevant information, and instruction.

Inner Child Therapy helps you to have a better knowledge of how and why difficulties arise, as well as how to overcome the erroneous beliefs that are preventing you from being your real self and enjoying the life you were born to live.
